I removed the plug sockets for the hot wires and split the original socket, spreading it a little wider than original. This allowed me to slip an alternate socket inside it and run the wires to crimp-on spade connectors which I hid inside the plinth. Everything works well now. Great working tail / brake lights for under $10. The light socket is part #LS6538 from NAPA."

Modified lamp base and replacement bulb socket

Above, replacement socket installed with a touch of solder. Cover plug-together connectors with shrink tubing.
